Create first. Then compete. The art of competition is self-expression.

Chinua Achebe, 1930-2013

Nigerian writer Chimamanda Adichie says that to understand Africa, one has to have multiple stories, varied stories — a balance of stories — about Africa. Such is also the case for the Philippines and the Filipino diaspora. Filipinos everywhere have a story to tell, each a piece in the identity that is Filipino.

What touched me the most about her talk is this line, β€œThe problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story the only story.”

I acknowledge the death of Chinua Achebe today, one of the most articulate and engaging non-White writers whose work influenced me at a young age. He inspired in me the boldness to tell my story from the multiple aspects that make me, me.
